Markings Markings will adhere to prescribed specifications in A999/A999M and shall include the NPS or OD and schedule number or average wall thickness, heat number, and NH (when hydraulic test is not performed) and ET (when eddy-current testing is performed) or UT (when ultrasonic testing is performed). The marking shall also include the manufacturer's private identifying mark, the marking requirement of section 12.3 on Hydraulic or Nondestructive Electric Test, if applicable, and whether seamless (SML), welded (WLD), or heavily cold-worked (HCW). For Grades TP304H, TP316H, TP321H & TP347H, the marking shall also include the heat number and heat-treatment lot identification.
Flattening Test For material heat treated in a continuous furnace flattening tests shall be made on a sufficient number of pipes to constitute 5% of the lot, but in no case less than 2 lengths of pipe.
Hydraulic Test or Nondestructive Test Each pipe shall be subjected to the nondestructive test(ET/UT) or the hydraulic test(HT).

The 254SMo alloy, with its high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, is particularly well-suited for environments with high chloride concentrations such as brackish water seawater pulp mill bleach plants and other process streams containing elevated levels of chloride.
Compared to Alloy 904L, Alloy 20, Alloy 825, and Alloy G, the chloride resistance offered by 254SMo Pipe is superior.
Additionally, the presence of copper enhances corrosion resistance in certain acidic conditions. Furthermore, thanks to its significant nickel content along with chromium and molybdenum elements present in abundance, 254SMo S31254 Tubing exhibits excellent performance against stress corrosion cracking.

The 254 SMo S31254 Tubing exhibits a face-centered cubic lattice structure. To achieve an austenitic structure, general annealing of the tubing is typically conducted at temperatures ranging from 1150 to 1200°C. In certain cases, there may be traces of metal middle phase (χ phase and α-phase) present in the material. However, under normal circumstances, these phases do not adversely affect its impact strength and corrosion resistance. When exposed to temperatures between 600 and 1000°C, precipitation along grain boundaries may occur.

Corrosion resistance for S31254 254SMO stainless steel seamless tubes pipes
254SMO S31254 tubing has a very low carbon content, which significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during heating. As a result, the material remains resistant to intergranular corrosion even after one hour of sensitization at temperatures between 600-1000°C, and is capable of passing the Strauss intergranular corrosion test (ASTM A262 Practice E). However, due to its high alloy content, there is a possibility of intermetallic phase precipitation at grain boundaries within the aforementioned temperature range. Although these precipitates do not typically lead to intergranular corrosion under normal corrosive conditions and welding operations, they may increase susceptibility to intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone when exposed to concentrated HNO3 . In chloride-, bromide-, or iodide-containing environments, ordinary stainless steels are prone to localized corrosion phenomena such as pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking. In some cases, the presence of halides may also accelerate uniform corrosion.
254SMO S31254 tubing exhibits particularly strong corrosion resistance in non-oxidizing acids. In pure sulfuric acid, it offers significantly better corrosion resistance than 316 stainless steel (a common grade), although its resistance is somewhat lower than that of 904L (N08904) stainless steel at high concentrations. In sulfuric acid containing chloride ions, however, 254SMO S31254 demonstrates the highest corrosion resistance among these alloys.
316 stainless steel is generally unsuitable for use in hydrochloric acid due to the risk of both localized and uniform corrosion. In contrast, 254 SMO S31254 tubing can be used in diluted hydrochloric acid under normal temperature conditions, and corrosion is typically not a concern within this range. Nevertheless, efforts should be made to avoid crevice corrosion.
In fluoride-containing environments such as H2SiF6 and HF, the corrosion resistance of conventional stainless steels is severely limited. However, 254SMO S31254 tubing maintains excellent corrosion resistance across a wide range of temperatures and acid concentrations.


Hot Working for S31254 254SMO stainless steel seamless tubes pipes 
Hot working should be performed within the temperature range of 1000-1200°C. Exceeding this range may negatively affect workability. Significant surface scaling typically occurs at temperatures above 1150°C. To ensure complete dissolution of any secondary phase precipitates formed during hot working, a subsequent heat treatment at a minimum temperature of 1150°C is recommended. Following this treatment, the material should be cooled as rapidly as possible. A slow cooling rate may lead to a reduction in corrosion resistance.  


Cold Working for S31254 254SMO stainless steel seamless tubes pipes
254SMO pipe exhibits excellent cold formability. Forming operations such as bending and pressing can be performed without significant difficulty during fabrication. Practical experience gained from the pressing of heat exchanger plates has been highly favorable. The material demonstrates a tendency to rapidly work harden during processing.

Welding property  for S31254 254SMO stainless steel seamless tubes pipes
254SMO alloy possesses good weldability.  When delivered, stainless steel sheets and plates have a homogeneous composition.  Remelting of the parent metal, such as during welding without filler metal, may cause microscale variations in composition for elements such as chromium, nickel and particularly molybdenum.  This phenomenon occurs in all highly alloyed stainless steels.  These variations may reduce the pitting resistance of the weld.   GTA and plasma arc welding without filler metal should therefore be avoided.
The material may not be subjected to abrasive contact with copper/brass items.  Penetration of copper/brass into the grain boundaries can give rise to crack formation.
Avesta P12 or P16 welding consumables should be used for all welding methods.
Ignite the electrode in the joint since ignition burns beside the weld can give rise to corrosion attacks.
Heat treatment is normally not necessary after welding.  However, welding without filler metal should be followed by solution annealing at 1150-1200°C and subsequent rapid cooling in order to achieve the best possible corrosion resistance.
To ensure optimum corrosion resistance the welds should be cleaned, preferably by pickling.

The most corrosion-resistant stainless steels contain molybdenum in the range of 6% to 7.3%. An example is the 254SMO alloy, which is commonly used in applications such as power plant condensers, subsea pipelines, and critical components of nuclear power plants, including industrial water piping systems.
